What is Waqf?
Waqf is one of the oldest and most influential institutions in the history of philanthropy. Its principle is based on preserving an asset or capital while dedicating its revenues to a specific cause. The original asset remains intact while its benefits continue to serve society.
From the earliest centuries of Islamic history, Awqaf played an essential role in financing public services and social initiatives. They contributed to the establishment of schools, universities, hospitals, libraries, scientific centers, shelters, and numerous institutions dedicated to the public good.
Waqf also represents a profound expression of individual responsibility. It allows each person to contribute to a cause whose benefits continue over time. This notion of continuity gives Waqf a unique place within the Islamic tradition.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“When the son of Adam dies, his deeds come to an end except for three: ongoing charity, beneficial knowledge, or a righteous child who prays for him.”
(Reported by Muslim)
Waqf represents one of the highest forms of this ongoing charity. It allows a sincere intention to become a lasting benefit for society.
Our areas of action
The needs of society constantly evolve, yet certain priorities remain universal: education, solidarity, the transmission of knowledge, social cohesion, and human development.
The Waqf Luxembourg Foundation operates in these areas with the ambition of supporting initiatives capable of creating lasting impact. We pay particular attention to projects that strengthen individual autonomy, improve access to education, and promote social inclusion.
Education occupies a central place in our vision. Investing in knowledge means investing in the future. We believe that knowledge and skills are among the most valuable resources a society possesses.
We also support initiatives that assist families, strengthen solidarity between generations, and address the needs of people facing situations of vulnerability.
Beyond social initiatives, we encourage cultural, scientific, and community projects that enrich society and strengthen the bonds between its members.
Every project supported by the Foundation is guided by the principles of sustainability and responsibility, with the objective of creating genuine and lasting value for the community.
Create a waqf
Creating a Waqf is first and foremost an act of transmission. It is the choice to dedicate part of one’s wealth to a cause that will continue to generate benefit over time.
For centuries, men and women have established Awqaf to support education, healthcare, research, social solidarity, and places of worship. Their vision continues to benefit millions of people today.
The Waqf Luxembourg Foundation supports those who wish to inscribe their commitment within this tradition of lasting generosity. Each project is unique. Some choose to support education. Others wish to contribute to community development or humanitarian initiatives. Others seek to create a meaningful family legacy.
Our role is to accompany this process with professionalism, transparency, and full respect for the founder’s intentions. We ensure that each Waqf is structured to guarantee its sustainability and to maximize its impact for its beneficiaries.
Creating a Waqf means choosing a legacy that continues to serve long after one has left this world.
